While I was in the UK I saw a great cushion made with the selvedges from fabrics. Selvedges are the bit on the side of the fabric. Many times they are printed with words, many have spots of colour on them so you know what colours match the fabric you are buying. I just loved the look of the cushion, planning to make one as soon as I can save or find enough selvedges to do so.

Here is the cushion I found using them.

I was surfing the web and came across some examples at Sew Mama Sew blog. They look great. Apparently I am not the only one who likes this look.

Doily Cushion

Look at the lovely cushion I made with an old doily. I used some thick muslin to make the cushion and then sewed a large doily on the front. Just beautiful!

I made these pretty cushions with a fabric covered in birds, great for a bed or a lounge/family room, I just love the colours in this fabric. The birds are so gorgeous. I did the back in the dotty fabric that matches one of the birds on the front.  You can see in the second photograph I have turned one of them around so you can see the pretty reverse side.

Cushions, cushions, cushions

Had a great day of cushion making today.  Really went to town and made heaps of them. I love cushions, and for some reason I am on a roll lately making lots of them. I have lots of fabric in my stash that I am determined to get through before I buy anymore. At least that is what I tell myself. 🙂

Anyway, back to the cushions I made. Firstly I did this one, it is covered in an old fabric that has writing all about the stars on it. It is not very big, just a cute little one that would look great with lots of other cushions around it.

The next one is this cute little girl one. I love the travel images on this fabric and the little girls look so nice.  Again, I have had this fabric in my stash for some time.

And the final cushion to share with you is this one. It has lovely images of keys and letters and postage stamps.  It is in gorgeous pinks, greens, browns and creams.

Cushion Inserts

Now here it my tip on making cushions. Make your own inserts. It is very easy. I have only recently been doing this.  Someone gave me a whole bag full of polyfill and I got some quilter’s muslin and sewed up my own cushion inserts. Here are some of the ones I made. They are pretty quick to make and the best part is that you can make them any shape or size you want. If you have a small piece of fabric that you want to use, then make a small cushion insert to match the shape of the fabric.

So I hope you have enjoyed my cushion post and maybe try making your own inserts.  Most of all, have fun!  Craft is meant to be fun, not a chore.

cheers, Debra
