quilting for a friend

Last year my friend discovered she was sick so I decided to make her a quilt in order to help with her recovery. I made this quilt in 4 days! Pretty amazing if I do say so myself. Normally it takes me months to make a quilt but I wanted to go and visit her after her surgery and I didn’t want to go empty handed.  I have made 2 other quilts before, both with the same pattern. Like most crafters, I have a few more “on the go” that I will complete one day. However, I had purchased some lovely quilting fabric in a Moda layer cake from my local store (shout out to the girls at Peppermint Stitches in Sylvan Rd, Toowong, Qld) and I wanted to use it.  I had never used a layer cake so I go so I got Googling and found a pattern I thought I could manage.  I did a simple pattern and a plain vanilla covered backing with a simple straight quilting method. The fabric is Moda Lexington (to die for!) in blues and browns. I was very happy with the result and my friend loved it.  Here it is photographed along the way.

I used what I think is called Pinwheel design, with light/dark triangles to make the block. I laid it out on the floor to distribute the blues and browns evenly. I did make a mistake a this point and put a couple of blocks with the light/dark in the wrong place, so I needed to take it apart again and redo it. I was definitely rushing and would have saved myself some work had I gone a little slower. I also think it is a good idea to take a photo so you can see better what the final product may look like.

As I hadn’t thought further than the quilt top I went back to the shop a couple of days later and got some yardage to make the outside borders. I chose one of the caramel coloured fabrics for a small border and the large border is the pretty floral blue fabric.  Here is the quilt with the border attached.

and a close up (yes that is my foot!)

I then bound it in dark blue fabric from the range. I hand stitched the binding at night watching TV.  It is so pretty. I love this fabric so much I might have to make one for me.

And here is the back.

what do you think?
